Lessons Of Hope And Culture In Bali
01/26/2012
After the bombings in Bali in 2002 and 2005, many Balinese lost their jobs and means of living as the Bali tourism industry and Bali travel declined dramatically. As a result, many children could no longer be sent to school for formal education as their parents could no longer afford the fees.
This has prompted the mother and daughter, Lia Comben and Carol Evans, to establish an association called Carolia Charity which aims to educate the young people of Bali who can no longer be sent to school by their parents.
Lia and Carol have put their focus on education, as well as on the health and well-being of those who live away from the tourist area of Bali.

A number of sponsors have already supported their cause and have sent the poor children in Karangasem in East Bali. However, the children also do their share as they are the ones who find their sponsors and the association provides for their clothing, toiletries, and stationery. They also get to meet their sponsors regularly through their parties that happen twice a year.
One of the activities that they have is the Kuta Beach Day. This is especially for all 100 children, along with their carers, from the many orphanages in Bali to come together to a day of games and overflowing food prepared by the charity.
There is also the Bali Kids/Anak Anak Clinic. The “Bali Kids/Anak Anak Clinic also runs a mobile clinic that monitors the orphanage children's health, and provides free medical and dental attention if needed," said Carol.
“Every child who has been through our education program has been employed when they left school," said Lia.
Bali Culture
Meanwhile, Balinese people continue to have so much faith and belief in the natural and spiritual elements that have to live in harmony. Balinese still conduct offerings to the gods in the hope of maintaining balance between nature and the gods. They share a symbolic portion of their harvest during ceremonies in Bali temples known as Subak temple.
Furthermore, they also participate in the maintenance of the temples as they contribute money or volunteer their services. This particular act reflects the achievement of harmony between the humans and the spirit realms, so with the human realms and nature.
