Complete Bali Experience With Popular Balinese Festivals Jul 05

Balinese festivals and Bali events are an integral part of Balinese life, an important feature in the social landscape of Bali. In every stage of life of the Balinese, there is a ceremony or ritual taking place together with other Bali festivals at full moon, a new calendar year or other days that the Balinese consider important.

A permanent fixture in the lives of the Balinese, Bali festivals are also held in each of the estimated 20,000 Balinese temples (pura) on the island at least twice yearly. Thus, Balinese festivals and events have become a huge part of the mysticism and allure as well as the great Bali experience that sets Bali apart from any other land.

An annual event in the wuku year, the Galungan festival is Bali’s most important festival which is held in the eleventh week of the 210th day in the Balinese calendar throughout the whole island as it celebrates the creation of our world and symbolizes the victory of Dharma, or Virtue, upon Adharma, or all that is Evil. During this ten-day festival, it is believed that all Balinese gods, including Sanghyang Widi, the supreme deity, will descend to earth for the festivities. The last and most important day of the ten day festival is called Kuningan.

Nyepi, or the final day of the saka year is a major festival in the saka calendar. Falling on the day after the new moon on the ninth month, Nyepi marks the beginning of a new lunar year and is a celebration observed with total silence. On this day, everyone in Bali including tourists must remain silent as it believes that evil spirits will leave the island, thinking that the place is uninhabited due to the complete stillness.
